Artist Working Space is Time well spent …

I have been at the Studio in Hylands House for a year now and truly believe that it has been Time Well Spent. It was not until my brother popped in one afternoon and took a few photos of me working in the studio, that I realised the numerous benefits of a working artist studio in such a public place. I had taken the studio on knowing some of the advantages and drawbacks but did not fully realise the rewards until now. Image

Committing myself to renting space at the Hylands House Artist Studios presented good points and bad, The studio space is warm with all amenities needed, but although it is subsisted by the local council there is a cost  (rent, insurance and such alike) yes I have an artist working space, contracted to a minimum of 16 hours a week. The Studios are also open to the public Sundays and Mondays and onsite, other artist and staff are always around adding to potential unwanted distractions. However, The rewards of renting a Studio away form home have been numerous and in some cases unexpected.

Escaping the artistic bubble, a few of the personal benefits:

  • Being around other Creatives, rubs of.
  • Boost my artistic confidence, the effects are noticeable.
  • Enforces self discipline and better working practices.
  • Productivity has been increased, significantly.

I have never seen the studio as a Personal Gallery Space (as some do) that is not to say I have not sold Paintings, I have.  Having the public wandering in the studio, can be a disadvantage and distraction but it has forced me to confront and explain what I do this has added to my understandings and abilities. More to the point I am no longer trapped inside myself and have been escaping the artistic bubble.. as so many artist are! Spending time with other creatives and people is a real bonus and perhaps the least expected benefit having my own working space.

Expanding the way I describe and consider my work as an artist is one of the things that has pushed the quality and insights about painting and art tremendously. This aspect has altered some of my false perceptions and added to the wealth of knowledge and personal confidence as an artist. As a direct result I have created new and beneficial relationships as well as establishing credibility within the artistic community.Image

Unlike working in my studio at home, being committed to 16 hours a week is at times a challenge. However, most weeks I manage 20 to 25 hours and whats more I really get excited about the paintings I am working on, sometimes even unable to sleep, because I can’t just go out to the studio I have to Plan a Working Day in the Studio. This has added to the self discipline needed as a self employed artist, creating better attitude towards my work and paintings as a result.

The amount and quality of the Paintings I am producing is stunning. The number of finished artworks has been almost prolific, trebling my out put and making superior work, as a direct result I am organising my first solo art show with twelve unique abstract artworks produced this year and along with many other paintings, drawings and colour studies the amount of work produced has made this an incredible year.

The benefits of a working artist studio and the rewards of renting a studio at Hylands House focused all my efforts in ways that I can only find of immeasurable benefit to me as an Artist.

Lindsey, Reclining Nude

Lindsey, Reclining Nude

Angular and stunning the bright colours of reds compete with the blues, purples and violets, creating a warm and luxurious painting of vivid forms creating a vibrant female nude figure in a celebration of energy and vitality.
The rich colours and relaxed pose draws us in and is in stark contrast that the powerful colours possess and yet still remains easy and informal, inviting us to share and communicate with the strong nude woman in the painting who is a former girlfriend of my youthful past.

Staying Positive is hard work

Painting and Art is my life. I love it, I love the fear and the exhilaration, the shear joy or creating something new and exciting and seeing it develop before me. its like magic or a drug…. But its exhausting, this is when I know that staying positive is so impotent.

I just feel exhausted, drained and lifeless….  Christmas is long past all those New year resolution’s and good intentions already seem wasted and thrown out, before I even got started. Not that I hold on to hard and fast to those half hearted self-promises. I struggled to clime out of bed again this morning and feel as though I could sleep for a month. Its just so hard to remain focused and positive.

That is after all that’s the real problem! maintaining a positive frame of mind… Is a challenge for so many of us and is perhaps more vital than skill, knowledge or ability. Having a mental image of ourselves and our true purpose, that we as individual pursue at any one time is vital. without it, even the mundane becomes difficult, we all simply grind to a halt, stagnate and drift from one catastrophe to the next disaster. while desperately waiting for someone to save us.

OK, I not going to preach to you about self-help. I’m not going to try and convince you of some hidden truth of success.. But having a positive mental attitude is something that I have over time come to accept as a fact. however it is, at times, I think like a perennial sapling that requires constant attention, cultivation, nurturing and protection even and perhaps most from those that you most trust. It is not that that they would steel your dreams, but dilute them to a lesser standing.

I feel like I’m working so hard and getting know were but every small step every new discovery brings me one inch closer to achieving something great or offering something of value… Then just one in a while someone walks into my studio and asks a question that just makes it all worth while….

find me on facebook

Today, it seems that every one has a Facebook account. I hummed and arred for a long time, untill final, I too decided it was about time I joined the throng and set up a Facebook page both about myself and art.

I soon realised that Facebook like most social sites (I suppose) is more about people you know than people you don’t. that’s not to say that I have not found friends, or taken the time to meet new people and artist from around the world. Like most things I have made a conscious effort to avoid using the Facebook  in quite the same way as those around me, as an individual. I am not interested in tittle-tattle or the silly games that seem so prevalent on this social network site.

In fact. I think that, despite my initial reservations and the bits I don’t like about social networks, Facebook has proved to better than I first expected. I now feel that such a site has, a lot more to offer everyone, than just connecting with your friends. It can be a valuable news platform.  Offering pictures, words and links, that in some ways equals, if not surpasses Twitter or such-like.

OK. im still not a big user of Facebook and I certenly don’t belive that I get anywhere neer the best out of such sites, but I have connected with a number of people and ideas that I would never have come into contact with without it and hope that this will continue to happen far into the future. should you wish you can find my Facebook page at the top and connect with me who knows this might be the just what we all need… connect and share, with new and interesting people everywhere.

dull Sunday is a contradiction

Ok. Sundays are supposed to be laid back and chilled out or that’s what I’m told. I never seam to get the chance, life always gets in the way, just too busy with food shopping, cutting hair and taking kids to a party. Wish I was painting or something, but instead reading, e-mails and such alike, well the lights not there or that’s today’s excuse….

Sundays coffe in Bed

Sundays mornings are for coffee in bed

Excuses, words and ideas that stop us all from doing something. The simple truth is that we all make excuses, it does not matter what it is, just do something, do it right, do it wrong, do it well, it just doesn’t make a difference so long as you do something. Because everything you do, you learn from and get better at what it is you do.

I admit that I struggle with this, I suppose, just like everyone else finding the drive and passion to conquer our own lethargy is half the battle. Decide what it is you want? and do that. Painting, is for me my passion and is as much about living life, feeling, seeing and being touched by the world, which that means, food shopping and such alike all of which make my Sundays far from dull.
